My friend’s grandfather
is in hospice care,
off everything except the pain meds.
He’s losing weight,
so his children bring him
a new leather belt.
“I’ll never get your money’s worth out of it,
what’s wrong with a hole drilled into the old belt,”
he wants to know.
He makes it to the engagement party
of one of the children’s children,
where he reads the baseball stats
with great interest,
the wild card races.
