That’s my daughter in the water

My father came to the little house
in Brome Lake on weekends

Where my great aunt and uncle lived
A blue half house

My uncle (6) and I (5) watched Liberace’s show at night: he was unfailingly gallant with the old ladies and their cake

Swam and poured salt on the leeches
that covered our bodies

Crossed a rope bridge near a field
of Black Eyed Susans

Then my father came and brought me a bag of little plastic animals

Sitting in the water, Dad nearby, with zebra hippo bear

Water coursing over them

Sun brilliant

There are only a few happy days in your life.
